How Can Phlegmatics Connect With God?

Those of us who are more emotional, driven, or excitable can envy the peaceful personality of our Phlegmatic friends.

But, like every follower of Jesus who wants to develop a closer relationship, Phlegmatics also need to discover ways that work for them.

Here’s some suggestions:

  • Pray for insight into your struggle with making space for God.  Pray the Psalmist’s words in Ps.139: 23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart….”

Ask “God, What is keeping me from coming close to You?”

Is it a lack of time or mental energy? Negative attitudes?

Too many things on your daily to-do list? Do you need to rethink your priorities?

Is it due to spiritual neglect? Unconfessed sin? Other issues?

Have you drifted away, grown cold and become used to it?

In 2 Peter, the Apostle challenges all of us to:

  • “Make every effort to add to your faith” (1:5-11).
  • “Make every effort to be found spotless, blameless and at peace with him” (3:14).
  • “Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (3:18).

  1. Ask God to give you a growing desire for Him and recognize you also have an Enemy who wants to keep you distanced from His presence. To learn more, click this link: https://www.poppysmith.com/blog/stay-alert-attacks-happen
  2. Pray with the Psalmist:
    • “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you” (Ps. 63:1)
    • “Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me” (Ps. 51:12)
  • Make a plan for coming into His presence.

Choose and commit to one specific practice. For instance, “I will set the alarm to spend time with God rather than trust myself to get up.” Or “I will set aside one Saturday morning a month to read, listen, and pray.”

  • Write these commitments on a calendar,

  • Ask someone to pray and hold you accountable. Then make a note to check in and discuss your progress.

As you’ve learned by now, God created a mixed bag of people! So let me encourage you:

  • Continue learning about who you are.
  • Celebrate all the strengths God has given you.
  • And keep seeking God’s presence and power in your life!
It doesn’t matter what type of personality strengths or weaknesses you have; God loves you. And He promises to continue His good work in you until the day of Christ Jesus.

May you grow in your passion for Him; however you express it!
