Is God Calling You?

When I visited my older sister, Brenda, in England a few years ago she reminded me of my early interest in God. Brenda is an outspoken atheist and both she and my unbelieving parents couldn’t figure out where my spiritual leanings came from.

Early Stirrings

“Poppy,” Brenda commented when I told her that I speak and write about having a relationship with God, “you’ve always been religious. Don’t you remember when we were little kids living in Sri Lanka?  You would walk around our bedroom with an open book in your hands singing hymns.  You draped a big ribbon around your neck like you were the minister and made me be the congregation.”Laughing at such a long forgotten, crazy memory, I said, “You must have thought I was a religious nut—especially as we never went to church with Mum and Dad.”

Brenda’s comments triggered further reflections: Where did my interest in God come from?

Drawn To Seek

Another buried memory flooded back. This time I was thirteen, living with my family in Singapore where my father was stationed with the British Royal Air Force.  Every Sunday my parents let me catch a bus on my own to travel thirty minutes to church (something I’d never let my thirteen-year-old do!).I hated to miss a week, yet I had little understanding of who God or Jesus were beyond names. That was to come a few years later.  But something, or rather Someone, drew me in my early years and I cannot get over it—nor do I want to.How about you? When do you remember God first stirring and calling you to Himself? I’d love to know and delight with you in the God who changed your life.

Blessings,

Poppy
