I'm sort of on vacation this week and trying to take an hour first thing in the morning to focus on God--what is He like? How is He real to me? What does Scripture say about Him?I want to focus, not flit all over in my thinking. To go deeper in my awareness of God, not just as I sit on the deck or lie propped up on pillows in my bed, but throughout the day. I want something to carry with me, to reflect on.This morning I began reading Hebrews Ch.1 and was struck by verse 12: But you remain the same and your years will never end. As a spiritual director, you learn to ask questions--and I do that to myself. Here's the question I asked myself today: What qualities, attributes, and characteristics of God have I seen in Scripture and in my life? Here's some of my answers: He is1. A hearing God--He has answered many prayers in ways that leave me amazed2. A compassionate God--when my circumstances have left me in acute pain, He comforted me3. A faithful God--when I grow dry and distant, the Holy Spirit draws me back with love4. A forgiving God--when I sin with my tongue or hold ugly stuff in my heart, He cleanses5. A restoring God--when I waver, He inspires me inwardly to trust, believe, persevere6. A patient God--when I struggle with the same old stuff, He keeps workin in me to growWhat is God to you? When has He been any of the above, or more, in your experience?Reflect, record, say thanks. He remains the same! I hope this life-strengthening truth goes from your head to your heart today.
